Dr. Attia was a mainstream surgeon who swallowed all the mainstream stuff about diabetes and obesity until he received an unexpected diagnosis that changed his life.

Although the realizations that he comes to—the weight gain is driven by hormones, not calories, and that diabetes and obesity are metabolic diseases of carbohydrate metabolism—is stuff the folks I hang around with have been saying for well over a decade, the turn-around by this mainstream, respected doctor, his personal journey and his poignant apology to all the patients he inadvertently harmed by swallowing all the mainstream malarkey about diabetes and obesity is something that you’ll really want to see.

Patients are told lose weight, change your diet, handed a copy of the Mediterranean diet & given prescriptions, then sent on their way. They have no idea how to implement change, why, or even the best changes to make. Clearly what we are doing is not working. I’m so glad there are people like Drs. Amen & Attia out there.

  4. This is an incredible video! I have posted to my fb page. Although I am not insulin resistant like Dr. Attia despite exercising and eating what I thought of as a healthy diet I maintained about 25 extra pounds over healthy body weight for the last 15 years. And then I met Jonny Bowden through “The Great Cholestrol Myth” and started on a different journey. Today I have lost 20 of those pounds without starving, beating myself up pounding the pavement hour after hour, and I feel better than I have in almost 20 years. I am a 57 year old registered nurse and have been interested in nutrition and health for at least the last 25 years, I think I’ve read every diet and fitness book ever printed, and this is such a valuable piece! Thank you for all that you do!

    Thank you for posting this. I am very impressed w/ Dr. Attia’s realizations and willingness to move beyond the conventional in order to truly help his patients. When I was in my teens, I had numerous symptoms of insulin resistance, despite being slender. Due to the fact that diabetes (both types) runs rampant on my father’s side, I pressed our doctor for blood work, in the hope he would help me learn how to manage it. Our family doctor laughed at me & told my mother I was a hypochondriac. Over the decades, I continued to have symptoms, and was met w/ the same response by countless doctors. Now in my 40s, I am overweight and at the brink of a disease that could have been avoided had the medical establishment listened instead of ridiculed me. Now, it seems, they take notice and yes, judge. I asked for help from them for DECADES, yet nothing. The change that has overcome Dr. Attia gives me hope that all is not lost in medicine today.

  6. Jonny… Thanks for this Ted talk. And thanks for scaling back the ‘offers’ on your web site. You are too important of a voice to allow any remarks about hucksterism into your orbit. To report from Oregon…I’m still 50 pounds lighter, still walking/running 5 miles whenever I feel like it,and all at 64 years old. Off all diabetes medicine…still flabbergasting my doctor (HDL was 78, he returned the report to the lab ’cause it had to be an error… Is was… The right number turned out to be 79)
    So look at me, actually taking control of my health, all due to your book LIVING LOW CARB. You are a wonderful teacher

  9. Tremendous presentation! Dr Attia gave an incredible story regarding his experiences and emotions. Dr Attia has tremendous courage to challenge the traditional views and to speak about alternatives. I hope this doctor continues his quest to find better alternatives and achievable pathways for individuals to choose from. I applaud your speech! Thank you Dr Attia!

  10. Thank you Johnny for this very profound video of Dr. Attia’s admission and apology. I appreciate that he calls out our biases and judgements towards obese people when in fact, obesity is a symptom of a much greater problem, insulin resistance. If we could only EDUCATE people on the harmful effects of sugar/starches/grains, and take all processed foods off the grocery shelves, we could all live healthier lives. So where do we start?

  11. I’m so grateful for finding this video / blog update in my inbox today. I’m already doing what he’s doing but in reading his website, learned that someone else answers questions the way I do.

    ie: is sugar toxic?
    traditional answer: yes / no / sort of
    his answer: test to see the amount of sugar you, your daughter or your spouse can tolerate.

    so.. it depends, and it depends on our unique metabolic type.

  13. Bravo, Doctors do indeed need to step back and reexamine diabetic treatments. If diabetes is indirectly linked to diet, then we should be looking to the diet to help with the treatment and/or cure. Once, diabetes was treated with diet then the concept of medicine lifted its ugly head. It literally became the magic bullet that was close to being worshipped.

    My family is a diabetic centered family. The question is never if you are diabetic, it is when is your doctor’s appointment for your diabetes/MS/POCOS. It is all the same. I hope that they see beyond their doctor’s opinion that this is all treatable and even curable.

Thank you so much for sharing this compelling and heart-felt TED talk; this really struck home for me and has created a shift in thinking for me with regards to clients I work with who are obese and/or diabetic. If only more doctors were brave enough to admit they don’t have all the answers and be open to exploring all possibilities in solving these health problems as Dr. Attia.

When I was training at Bethesda here it upset me how the young kids despised the ‘fatties’ that came in for stomach stapling or other treatments – and how I wrote a poem to them having to talked with these patients, sometimes into the night, and almost all of them had been abused in some way, and apart from any physiological reason, their fat issue inevitably related to pushing people away – no more abuse if they were that unattractive ..

I love the direction in which he is taking this, questioning conventional wisdom. It’s a matter of time before we reach the mainstream. The revolution is in progress!

  20. HELLO, MY DR. I AM DIABETIC.MY R AGREES ABOUT THE INSULIN RESISTANCE MAY BE THE NEXT BIG BREAKTHROUGH IN TREATING DIABETES. IN THE MEAN TIME I AM STILL USING CONVENTIONAL METHODS TO CONTROL MY A1C’S (5.0-5.2 RANGE FOR THE LAST SIX 3 MO. CHECKS UPS). CONTROLLED DIET, AS EXERCISE I CAN SQUEAZ E IN. AIMING FOR 4.5 A1C BY EXERCISING 20 TO 40 MIN. AEROBIC ACTIVITY AFTER MEALS….OH AND STAY AS ACTIVE AS POSSIBLE ALL DAY…. EVEN SUNDAY. LOTS TO STAYING HEALTHY AS A DIABETIC AND ALTHOUGH THERE ARE GENERAL RULES I THINK EACH INDIVIDUAL HAS TO FIND THEY’RE OWN CUSTOMIZED LIFE STYLE THAT WORKS EFFECTIVELY FOR THEM. GARY P
